What are VOCs?
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are organic chemicals that evaporate into the air. Indoor sources include: paints and lacquers applied on wallpapers, wood preservatives, plywood, moth repellents, cleaning supplies, pesticides, everyday items such as perfumes and hair sprays, office equipment such as copiers and printers, graphics and craft material including glues and adhesives.
Health Effects
Chronic exposure may lead to compounding long-term health effects. However, even a short period of exposure to VOCs may cause symptoms such as:-
- Eye, nose, throat and respiratory tract irritation (e.g. conjunctival irritation)
- Headaches
- Visual disorders
- Memory impairment
- Loss of coordination
- Nausea and vomiting
- Allergic skin reactions
- Damage to liver, kidney and Central Nervous System (i.e. brain and spinal cord)
Indoor Air Pollution
Respiratory and allergic effects in infants have also been associated with VOCs.

Sick Building Syndrome (SBS)
